Time-Constrained Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem in Urban E-Commerce Delivery

Electric vehicle routing problems can be particularly complex when recharging must performed mid-route. In some applications such as the e-commerce parcel delivery truck routing, however, mid-route may not necessary because of constraints on capacities and maximum allowed time for delivery. this study, we develop a mixed-integer optimization model that exactly solves time-constrained capacitated problem, especially interest to vehicles. We compare our solution method with an existing metaheuristic carry out exhaustive case studies considering four U.S. cities -- Austin, TX; Bloomington, IL; Chicago, Detroit, MI two types: conventional vehicles battery electric (BEVs). these examine impact capacity, travel time, service (dwelling physically deliver parcel), BEV range system-level performance metrics including miles traveled (VMT). find followed by capacity plays key role in approach. assume 80-mile baseline without recharging. Our results show has minimal VMT per averages around 72 miles. study shared-economy deliveries, observe could reduced 38.8\% Austin if providers were operate their distribution centers jointly.
